Christ its a bitch to put onto your PC...

I wanted to hook up my old hard drive and retrieve some files... only for Vista to want to re-format it?!

I think I will live without those files for a while...

But once Vista is on your PC... its pretty sweet! Anyone else got it?

No, not yet. To be honest, until I upgrade to a new computer (in a year or two's time), I don't think I'll bother.

Games are the big issue for me, and until enough Vista-only games are out there to force me to upgrade, I won't.

I play a lot of older games, and I've read that the backwards compatability of Vista isn't that great.

Also want a few service packs to come out first...

To be fair... I have been ok with the backward compatibility. If you get the 32 bit version, you should be ok. The 64 bit version causes a LOT of problems with software... the main being my firewall and antivirus!

Usually you can find the drivers you need... so before you upgrade you should do a check on all your hardware!

Not sure about Vista yet but doesnt it have a hardware compatability test pre install like XP has? That way it forces you to upgrade via t'internet for the latest drivers pre-install.

I couldn't upgrade my drivers as my PC didn't have an internet connection when Vista was being installed.

Once installed, it gives you the option for upgrading etc, but that is the same for XP.

I do hate the User setting thing where it keeps a log of EVERYTHING that you do... which you turn off, but then you have a security alert/error!

Really? They've kept that quiet...

The only issue I have is when I log on to my profile and it seems to take an age for everything to set up.

Have you used Windows 7? Any good?

Windows 7 is supposed to be good, answering a lot of the issues that many people have with Vista - the biggest, I guess, being that it has a much smaller footprint on your machine, allowing things to run faster.

I'll get it eventually, though may wait until it's been up and running properly for a few months (though I said the same thing in this thread about Vista and am still using XP Image)

Vista is quite stable. But it is a little slow on startup times.

And I have read the same reports on Windows 7 and from what I have seen/heard is that it is what Vista was MEANT to be.

Also been looking at a few forums on it (where people have been running it) and it seems it runs like a dream, even on an old 'rig' - seems most people are using laptops and they're saying speeds are very good.

Will probably buy in the new year...

Ihave put it on a PC, it was about 500 MB also on a laptop about 250 MB

I assume the laptop version is smaller so as not to make the laptop to heavy.

Is that Windows 7?

If so, then that would make sense. I am just hoping that this is the first iteration of Windows that really propels it forward, without me needing to upgrade 90% of my kit...
